Your aim with this assignment is to be as clear as you can when presenting dense or complex ideas.

Focus on the big picture. Work on pages, paragraphs over sentences.

Don’t waste words! Make every sentence count and add to your project.

Be specific. Use precise language rather than general terms.

Simple sentences are better than confusing ones. Don’t add too many points or facts to a sentence. Spread them out so your reader can follow along.

Don’t spread out too much. Clear over wordy.

Avoid sentences with long windups. Get to the point quickly and explain.

Don’t repeat key words close together. Don’t repeat words in the same sentence.

Avoid repetition. Don’t say the same thing different ways unless you are doing it for emphasis.

Vary sentence lengths. Many long sentences wear out your reader and many short sentences run together. Use a variety of sentence lengths. Read out lout to see how it sounds.

Cut your draft. We revise drafts to make them more effective. You should normally write long then cut down to length. Keep in mind you want to cut 10 to 25 percent of a draft without losing content.

What does all this suggest to you? What do these points have in common?

  1. Revise Draft
  2. Read Chapter 35, Revising your own work

Why do you think we started this class with a Literacy Narrative and now a Report? Why these assignments?

I think we started with a Literacy Narrative to get us ready for the next challenging assignments in the near future to get us well prepared. We were all extremely confident with the Narrative assignment but now with the report is to figuring out how to write a college research paper.

I feel like we sated with the literacy narrative to show and tell a little about ourselves to not just you but to the class as a whole. Finding out about what makes us individually happy. What we considered to be important to us. I feel as if you have given us the research assignment to show a little bit of our creative side and how we think, by giving us the free will to choose what type of report we would turn in.

I think we started with the literacy narrative because writing about something we experienced personally would be easy for most people and helps us get used to writing papers.
Writing a research paper about something we’re interested in is a great second paper because we’re still writing about something we’re familiar with, but we’re learning about things we didn’t know about the subject as well as the process that goes into an effective research paper.

I think we began with a literacy narrative so we could get comfortable with writing to a specific audience and to also know exactly what to write about and stay on subject. That helped to slowly get into writing a research paper, and taught us to know how to research and what to research.

I feel like we started with a literacy narrative so we could write about ourselves and let our classmates and professor get to know us better and our writing skills. It helped me do my research paper because I feel more comfortable expressing myself.

I believe we started this class with a narrative essay so we could practice learning to gather information and present it in a chronological order in order to prepare us for this research report. In addition the specific topic of the literacy narrative we wrote made us think about a time we learned something and had us explain what we got from it personally, the research report can benefit as encouragement or a pose as a challenge from the inspiration of the report compelling us to want to learn about, and present a new topic.
