Avatar: The last Airbender was the first show I can remember watching at nine having an impact on me. Long ago the 4 nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them but when the world needed him most he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new avatar an air bender named Aang. The avatar is a great spirit of light and good. The avatar spirit reincarnates into a new person from each of the four nations in a cycle. The cycle follows Fire Nation, Air Nomads, Water Tribe then Earth kingdom. The person with the avatar spirit can bend all four elements. These elements also represent the nations and people can only bend the element that person nation represents. The Fire Nation wants to control the entire world because they believe they are the dominant element. Before the war started the Air nomads were forced to break their tradition and told Aang he was the avatar when was 12 years old instead of 16. He ran away scared only wanting to be a kid. He got caught in a storm and then froze himself to keep alive. After 100 years Katara and her brother Sokka found him and broke him free. Avatar: The Last Airbender has a little bit of everything from fighting to loving and laughter because it’s about the journey of a boy to a mature young adult in a war torn world. And how he must stop the Fire Nation before they conquer the world. It is such a great show because it has all the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos. It has great lessons to learn from. The lesson or episode that stuck the most was The Swamp.
As they go along their journey they learn life lesson from teachers , experience, and strange encounters. In the episode The swamp Aang, Katara, socka, and their pets get sucked into a tornado Aang sokka and Katara get separated from their pets. After a whole day of looking they go to sleep then wake up to vines attacking them. After the encounter they all get separated and they start seeing visions. The sister saw her mom who died from protecting her. It was only a glimpse and vanished as soon as she touched her shoulder to turn her around. The brother saw his first love, a princess, who gave her life to save her people. She only whispered ” You couldn’t protect me” and then disappeared. Avatar Aang saw a little girl he has never meet before . As he gets closer to her she reappears in the off distance again. So he starts chasing her. She keeps doing this until he is right about to catch her but instead slams right into Katara, the sister. They start rolling down a huge tree vine and crash into in Katara’s brother Sokka. Explaining what they just saw and experienced, a huge monster made from vines starts attacking them. After they defeat the monster it turns out to be a local swamp man protecting his home, thinking they are invaders. After explaining how they got lost the local takes them to the center of the swamp. The local explains to them the mysteries and wonders of the swamp”This whole swamp is actually just one tree spread out over miles. Branches spread and sinking and take route and then spread some more, one big living Organism. Just like the entire world…..If you listen hard enough u can hear every living thing breathing together, you can feel everything growing. We are all living together even if most folks don’t act like it. We all have the same roots and we are all branches of the same tree.” After the lesson Aang now knows how to find his pets. By using his avatar spirit he can connect to his pets spirits.
All of there vision were about there ethos because their vision were about what was consuming their thoughts and feelings. This is also evidence of the mysteries of the swamp. Avatar Aang meets an unsuspecting teacher in an unusual way. His teacher is a Procter of the swamp and lived there his whole life who found enlightenment. Him living in the swamp his whole life gives him an ethos because he must understand how the ecosystem is. It also shows that he respects nature and has a caring heart. Aang’s encounter with this strange swamp person becomes an unusual teacher who helps guide him. He tells him how we are from the same roots. Even if we live separately. This applies to pathos, our emotion on how we seek to understand each other. This also applies to our ethos because it is a key characteristic. We should respect each other’s views. If they cannot practice empathy they may not be a nice person. And from a scientific stand point we are all made from the same molecules, just rearranged making us different as well. Being able to connect was the theme in this episode. You can get a different perspectives from the characters view point through out their journey. It appeals to our pathos because they are teenagers going through something like we went through our teenage years and try to find a grounding. They are learning life with a war going on which brings a lot of external and internal conflict. People can relate. They learn that we are all branches of the same root. This lesson hits pathos ethos and logos making it a very true lesson.
Avatar: The last Airbender is rated Y7, but because of its influences and different ways of view it has a broad range from all the way from seven years and older. I first watched this show at nine amazed by all the magical manipulation of the elements and how they used them to fight. This show really is for any age. For example my cousin first saw this show at 40 and he loves the messages behind the episodes and the characters development progression. He said, “This show is like an epic saga”. I remember first watching this show at nines years old I had no idea how influential it would be to me. What makes this show great is not just how it appeals to our emotions but it also shows how people grow and develop. You can learn about your own characteristics through other people’s journey. In their life they are living through a war and most people are living through their own war in one way or another. The influences the show uses are from the real world and use actual teachings about chakras, meditation, fighting style and much more. The show is inspired from a more of ancient Asia time period and uses a lot of its teachings, philosophies and principles. This show has a cult like following having hard core fanatics because people can learn and relate to what this show offers.
